Migration Health Corridor

Since March 2014, FACT has been implementing a project entitled: “Migration Health Corridor Project: Prevention, Treatment, Care and Adherence Support for Mobile Populations Project” supported by USAID, Medicines Science for Health (MSH) & Hospice and Palliative care Association of Zimbabwe (HOSPAZ).The goal of the project is to reduce the vulnerability and risks of the migrant populations and communities affected by migration to HIV infection, and provide comprehensive prevention, treatment, care and support services to them, their families and communities. The achievement of the project goal rests on the accomplishment of the following three specific objectives:

  1. Strengthening capacity of community based organisations and health professionals in Mutare urban and Chimanimani districts to provide comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care and adherence support services to migrants and communities affected by migration.
  2. Promoting healthy behaviors pertaining to Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) and reduction of transmission of HIV among migrant populations and communities affected by migration in Mutare urban and Chimanimani districts.
  3. Strengthen local referral systems with health facilities to improve access to and uptake of HIV prevention, care, and treatment services among migrants and communities affected by migration in Mutare urban and Chimanimani districts.

The migration health corridor project is being implemented in Mutare urban and Chimanimani’s four wards namely 3, 5, 8 & 20. It is targeting the most at risk populations (MARPs) like sex workers, long distance truck drivers, cross border traders and communities affected by migration. A total of 1 000 general community members, 260 most at risk populations and 75 households have been reached with Internal Savings And Lending. More so, 519 people living with HIV were reached with HIV-related information.
